Hulk Hogan Reveals Why His Netflix Biopic Starring Chris Hemsworth Got Scrapped
It was announced six years ago that Netflix was making a Hulk Hogan biopic, and Thor actor Chris Hemsworth was set to play the wrestling superstar. Todd Phillips was directing with a script from his Joker writer Scott Silver, and everyone involved was pretty excited.
Earlier this year, Phillips revealed that the film was no longer moving forward, but things weren’t really explained by anyone. Now, Hogan is speaking out about why the project fell apart.
During a recent interview on the PBD podcast, Hogan said of Netflix:
“They kind of missed a beat in the contract. There was a payment that wasn’t placed at the right time.” Hogan highlighted the quality of the script, calling it “amazing” and noting, “When I read it, I’m like, oh my God, this is really good.”
Hogan shared that he worked closely with Silver for three years, contributing his insights into wrestling’s positive and negative sides. “Spent about three years with this writer going back and forth. When I read it, it was just very, very dark,” he said, adding that this darker tone might resonate with the public’s interest in the realities of wrestling.
The script, he believed, was so powerful that it had “Oscar” potential for Hemsworth, especially given that he’d never played a real person before.
Ultimately, Hogan chose to walk away from the project when Netflix missed the contractual payment deadline. “I just was moving forward at the time, and when they, business-wise, missed a date, there was an option for me to pull out and I did,” he confirmed.
It’s too bad for fans and everyone involved that the film didn’t come together. Are you bummed that this movie fell apart?
