Ian McKellen Doubles Down on Major AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Spoiler and Amusingly Shows How He Acted in the Scene
Marvel has been playing things pretty close to the chest with Avengers: Doomsday, but thanks to Ian McKellen we know one big thing that will happen!
The stepped in and casually delivered and doubled down on a previous comment he made about Magneto and the destruction of New Jersey.
While appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, McKellen talked about stepping back into the role of Magneto for the next Avengers movie, saying:
"I don't always understand the story of these movies that I'm in. But in this one, I don't think I'm spoiling anything by saying that Magneto destroys New Jersey. I'm sorry about that."
So that must be the one thing that he took away from Doomsday, Magneto is back, and apparently the Garden State doesn’t make it out unscathed. McKellen is reprising his iconic X-Men role in the fifth Avengers film, and I’m excited to see him in this role again!
McKellen didn’t stop there. He went on to physically demonstrate how Magneto unleashes his powers on the city, giving the audience a surprisingly committed performance right there on the show.
"So, I'm standing up pretending to do that, and the wind is blowing in my hair, and I'm putting on a fierce look, and I'm trying to be magnetic."
According to McKellen, that still wasn’t intense enough for the director, who pushed him to dial it up even more and told him to "look more furious." The clip of McKellen acting this out has since made the rounds online, and it’s exactly as delightful as you’d hope.
McKellen isn’t the only X-Men legend crossing over into the MCU with Avengers: Doomsday. Patrick Stewart is returning as Charles Xavier, joined by James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Channing Tatum as Gambit.
They’re all entering an already massive ensemble that also includes The New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, The Avengers, and plenty of other MCU heavy hitters. It’s shaping up to be one of Marvel’s biggest crossover events yet.
Fans have already caught a glimpse of McKellen’s Magneto thanks to the X-Men focused Doomsday trailer, which features Magneto seated across from Professor X in a moment loaded with history and tension.
Beyond that, details are scarce, but we do know the heroes will eventually have to unite against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, which alone raises a lot of crazy and interesting possibilities.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, and if New Jersey really is doomed, at least it’s going out in spectacular Marvel fashion.
