Idris Elba Says LUTHER Movie 'Is Happening' and Teased 'The Sky Is the Limit'

A few weeks ago, we reported that actor Idris Elba said his BBC series Luther was “this close” to developing a feature length follow-up movie. After I wrote that up, I went and binged the entire series, which consisted of just 20 episodes in 5 short seasons. This is such a freaking great series! The show follows Elba as John Luther, a genius murder detective whose methods help him to solve crimes, but often interfere with his personal life, which is filled with turmoil.

He made the remark at a press junket that he would like to see Luther come back in a film, and believed they were close to making it happen. But now it looks like we are even closer! While receiving a BAFTA Special Award at the Virgin Media BAFTA Television Awards last Friday, Elba told press:

“I’ve maintained I’d like to see it come to a film, and that is where I think we are heading towards — a film. And I’m looking forward to making that happen. It is happening.”

He went on to add:

“With film, the sky is the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines. And a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale. But John Luther is always going to be John Luther.”

Now that I have watched the series, I have to say that they absolutely have to make a follow up! I don’t care if it’s a movie, another season, or something else entirely, but the series cannot end the way it did! I have to know what’s going on with John Luther, and I am really excited that Elba is talking about it and championing the project into a reality.

Are you a fan of the series? If you haven’t watched it yet, you can watch all the episodes on Amazon Prime, and I sincerely recommend you do.
