Ike Barinholtz in Talks to Play Elon Musk in Luca Guadagnino’s AI Drama ARTIFICIAL
Director Luca Guadagnino has found the actor who might take on the role of Elon Musk in his upcoming film Artificial. According to reports, Ike Barinholtz is in talks to play the billionaire entrepreneur in Guadagnino’s Amazon MGM feature, which dives into the fascinating and chaotic world of artificial intelligence.
As previously revealed, Artificial is being described as a “comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence.” The film stars Andrew Garfield and recent Oscar nominee Yura Borisov (Anora), and early details point to a story loosely inspired by the dramatic events at OpenAI in 2023, when CEO Sam Altman was fired and then reinstated in a matter of days.
While nothing is confirmed, Garfield is expected to play Altman, with Borisov reportedly portraying Ilya Sutskever, the OpenAI co-founder who led the internal effort to remove Altman.
The script comes from Simon Rich (An American Pickle), who is also producing alongside David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford, and Jennifer Fox.
Barinholtz, fresh off an Emmy nomination for his role as Sal Saperstein in the Hollywood satire The Studio, is great when it comes to character-driven projects. His past credits include TV favorites like Eastbound & Down, The Mindy Project, and The Afterparty, as well as feature films such as Blockers and Neighbors.
This project marks another collaboration between Guadagnino and Amazon MGM, following their work on Challengers (2024), Bones and All (2022), and the reimagining of Suspiria (2018). The studio is also behind Guadagnino’s upcoming thriller After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri, which is set to premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
