In 1984 Mark Hamill Dressed In a Tux To Host The Big TV Premiere of STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE; Watch It Here
The first time that I watched Star Wars: A New Hope was on a little 12” black and white TV that my parents owned. It’s crazy to think about that! Now, the first Star Wars movie I saw was The Return of the Jedi, and that was on a big screen at a drive-in theater. It was so sad to go from that to the little black and white TV, but it’s just what I had!
Star Wars: A New Hope made its big TV premiere in 1984 and it was a big event that was hosted by Mark Hamill. He came out in a tux and everything! The special included a short video showing the fans and the frenzy that the film had started. Hamill says in the video:
“You are about to become part of the phenomena of Star Wars. In a few minutes, you’ll see a movie that has become more than just a movie. For seven years now, it has been a part of my life, and the saga it’s given birth to has touched the lives of millions of others.”
He added: “When it came out, the world went instantly Star Wars crazy.” He also calls it “one of the most extraordinary moments in movie history… The beginning of the Star Wars saga.”
The video puts the spotlight on the action figures and merch, and even interviewed a family that “lived, breathed, and eat” Star Wars. They showed off their insane collection, which at the time was worth over $15,000. There’s also some behind-the-scenes footage that was shown off.
There’s a lot that went into the pre-show special and if you’re a fan of the franchise there’s no doubt that you’re going to enjoy this and have a good laugh.
This video is certainly a blast from the past! Enjoy!
