Inde Navarrette’s Rogue Casting Sparks X-MEN Fan Debate Over OBESESSION Success
Inde Navarrette is officially stepping into Rogue’s boots for Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot, and it didn’t take long for fans to start arguing about how she got there.
Marvel announced Navarrette as Rogue during its D23 Expo panel last weekend, following the actress’ recent breakout in Obsession. The timing has led some people to suggest that the popularity of the project played a major part in Marvel casting her.
Others aren’t buying that argument at all. After all, an actor giving a standout performance and then landing a much bigger role isn’t exactly some strange Hollywood phenomenon.
Navarrette had already made it clear that she wanted a shot at the MCU before the casting announcement, and she previously confirmed that she had spoken with X-Men director Jake Schreier. Now she’s officially part of Marvel’s new generation of mutants as one of the most recognizable members of the team.
The debate picked up after Paul Tassi of Forbes pointed out that Navarrette was still relatively unknown before Obsession. She previously had a recurring role on Superman & Lois as Sarah Cushing, but Obsession brought her a new level of attention.
“I think she’ll kill as Rogue now that we know what she can do, but man this felt so random as Obsession and Nikki were blowing up.”
Matt Jarbo of the Hollywood After Dark Podcast also connected Navarrette’s Obsession success with her landing the Rogue role.
Before Marvel made its choice, Cailee Spaeny had become one of the more popular fan-casts for the character. Jarbo offered a simple explanation for why Navarrette may have jumped to the front of the line: “Inde has the one thing Hollywood desperately wants: heat.”
Sure, having momentum probably doesn’t hurt when you’re trying to land big movie roles. But some MCU fans have pushed back against the idea that Navarrette’s casting can simply be chalked up to Obsession becoming popular.
A strong performance getting an actor noticed by major studios is how careers have worked forever. Sometimes the right project puts someone on the radar at exactly the right moment.
Navarrette also isn’t walking into Marvel without experience. Her run on Superman & Lois gave her several years working within the superhero TV space, while Obsession gave audiences another look at what she could do. Whatever combination of factors ultimately got her the part, Marvel clearly saw enough to hand her Rogue.
Navarrette joins an interesting mix of established names and rising actors in Marvel Studios’ new X-Men cast. Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, Kit Connor is Cyclops, Samara Weaving is Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott is Professor X, Maya Boyd is Storm, and Adam Driver will take on the villainous Mister Sinister.
Kevin Feige has already said Marvel’s next phase of projects will place a heavy focus on mutants, with X-Men serving as the beginning of a larger Mutant Saga.
Those stories will also exist alongside established MCU franchises such as Black Panther, opening the door for mutants to become a major part of Marvel’s connected universe rather than being tucked away in their own corner.
For Rogue in particular, there’s a lot of material Marvel can dig into. She’s one of the most popular X-Men characters, and fans are going to have plenty of opinions about how she should look, sound, fight, and interact with the rest of the team. Casting the role was always going to attract scrutiny regardless of who Marvel chose.
Navarrette now gets the chance to make the character her own. Marvel Studios’ X-Men is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters in May 2028.
