Is KINGSMAN Star Taron Egerton Lucasfilm’s New Han Solo?

As you know, Lucasfilm is in the process of developing multiple standalone Star Wars films at the moment, and a Han Solo prequel story has been a hot item of discussion among fans. If we ever did see a Han Solo standalone movie, the only way it’s going to happen is if it gives us kind of an origin story that focuses on the adventures of a younger version of the character.

Gareth Edwards is directing one of these spinoff films, the first draft of which was written by Gary Whitta. Chris Weitz is the screenwriter who has been brought on board to write the second draft. It also seems like Felicity Jones could take the lead female role in the film. The movie is set to be released in 2016, and rumor has it the story will follow a group of bounty hunters who are hired to steal the plans for the Death Star. None of that is confirmed though.

It was previously reported that the other standalone movie is being developed by Fantastic Four director Josh Trank, and we’ve had no clue what that film will entail… until now.

UK newspaper The Sun (via: Daily Mail) claims that the second standalone movie will feature a young Han Solo, which fans have long speculated about. They also say that Kingsman: The Secret Service star Taron Egerton is being looked at to fill the role of Han Solo.

The report goes on to say the movie will show us “how Harrison Ford’s iconic character got the Millennium Falcon and as well as showing how he fell out with Jabba the Hutt.” I assume that will include how he and Chewbacca met as well. It wouldn’t be a decent origin story with out that big piece of his history being included.

The Sun is a tabloid paper, so I wouldn’t put a lot of trust in it. But it does open up a conversation. There was also an interesting tweet from Kingsman comic writer Mark Millar, who said:

“Taron shot first. #justsayin”

Maybe he’s just reacting to the rumor, but there’s always the slight chance that he might know something that the rest of us don’t.

I loved Taron in Kingsman, and I think he would be a very interesting choice to take on the part of Solo. I think that he could actually pull it off. I'm also open to the idea of a origin film. There’s a lot of stuff that they can play with there, and even if you aren’t on board with the idea, chances are this is going to be something that Lucasfilm eventually does. (You can read about five moments from Solo’s early life that would be cool to see here.)

George Lucas wanted to include a 10-year-old version of Solo is Revenge of the Sith, and you can see some concept art for that here. I’m sure Lucasfilm will come up with something  a lot better than anything Lucas would have done with a younger Solo character.

What are your thoughts on the possibility of Egerton playing Han Solo in an origin standalone film?
