Is Marvel’s ZODIAC Secretly an AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Sequel? Clark Gregg Raises Questions
Could Marvel be bringing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back in a completely unexpected way? A mysterious new Marvel Television series called Zodiac is headed to Disney+, and a recent social media post from Clark Gregg has fans wondering if Agent Phil Coulson might be making a comeback.
Marvel announced Zodiac at New York Comic Con, confirming that the live-action series will premiere on Disney+ in 2028. Beyond that, the studio has revealed almost nothing about the project, leaving fans to figure out what Marvel might have planned.
The official Disney+ announcement simply states: "'Zodiac,' a new live-action series from Marvel Television, is currently casting and set to go into production in 2027." It’s also said to be an action spy thriller.
There have been rumors that Zodiac could be an X-Files-inspired spy thriller, but Marvel hasn't confirmed any story details. The name itself doesn't offer many clues either.
Several organizations in Marvel Comics have operated under the Zodiac name, although none immediately stands out as an obvious choice for an entire television series.
One interesting possibility involves Jonathan Hickman's Secret Warriors comics, which featured a mysterious organization called Zodiac, also known as the Great Wheel. The group has connections to S.H.I.E.L.D., making it a potential source of inspiration for the upcoming show.
Adding to the speculation, the newly revealed Zodiac logo appears to incorporate a design element reminiscent of the S.H.I.E.L.D. emblem. That could be a coincidence, but it's certainly an interesting creative choice if Marvel has something else in mind.
Then there's Gregg. The actor, who played Phil Coulson throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe and starred in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., recently shared the official Zodiac title treatment on Instagram. Naturally, that got people talking.
Gregg sharing the announcement doesn't confirm he's involved, but considering his history with Marvel, it's easy to understand why fans are connecting the dots. Could Zodiac actually be a continuation of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., or perhaps a new series that brings some familiar characters back into the MCU?
Imagine seeing Coulson working alongside Daisy Johnson, aka Quake, and a new generation of superpowered agents investigating strange threats and dangerous organizations.
A spy thriller with supernatural or science fiction elements could be a great way to bring those characters back while introducing something new.
Of course, bringing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back would be an interesting move for Marvel. The original series developed a passionate fanbase, but it never reached the mainstream popularity of the studio's biggest MCU projects.
Still, Marvel has already demonstrated a willingness to revisit characters from its earlier television productions. Daredevil: Born Again brought Charlie Cox back as Matt Murdock, giving the character another opportunity to lead his own series.
Why couldn't Coulson and his team receive similar treatment? There's also the question of how Marvel would approach the continuity of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., particularly given the complicated relationship between the show's later seasons and the larger MCU. A new series could offer an opportunity to address some of those questions.
For now, there's no official confirmation that Zodiac has any connection to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Gregg's Instagram activity could simply be an actor showing support for a new Marvel project.
But between the comic book connections, the familiar-looking logo, and Gregg's post, fans have some interesting reasons to keep an eye on this one.
Zodiac is scheduled to begin production in 2027 ahead of its Disney+ debut in 2028.
Would you like to see Zodiac bring Agent Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. crew back into the MCU, or would you rather Marvel introduce an entirely new team?
