Is Vin Diesel Directing FAST FOREVER? His Latest Tease Raises Questions
At this point, trying to figure out what’s actually happening with Fast Forever has become almost as complicated as the increasingly insane missions Dominic Toretto and his family keep getting themselves into.
The final chapter of the Fast & Furious saga is currently scheduled to hit theaters in March 2028, but the road to getting there has been strange.
Vin Diesel has been dropping teases about the movie for a while now, and his latest may be the most curious one yet. Is Diesel hinting that he’s going to direct the damn thing?
Diesel recently posted a black-and-white photo on Instagram featuring Dom’s iconic 1970 Dodge Charger R/T. The image itself is cool enough to get Fast & Furious fans fired up and it came with the caption:
“Director… Hmmm.”
That’s it. No explanation. No additional context. The obvious interpretation is that Diesel could be teasing a move into the director’s chair for the movie, which would be a pretty major development.
Louis Leterrier, who directed Fast X, has been attached to direct the next movie, and there hasn’t been any official announcement saying that has changed.
Leterrier previosly explained that he remains fully committed to finishing the Fast story. At the same time, he isn’t interested in sitting around waiting for all the pieces to fall into place, so he has continued directing other projects.
“I love Fast. I worked very hard in coming up with the idea for the end and everything. I was so lucky to be a part of the franchise. So I can’t wait, but I also cannot wait. Directors don’t idle well, so I have to direct.”
Still, fans jumped on Diesel’s post with plenty of fire emojis and excitement. Diesel directing the final Fast & Furious movie seems like it would make sense. He already has directing experience, including the 1997 film Strays, an episode of The Ropes, and the 2009 short Los Bandoleros.
That last project is particularly relevant because Los Bandoleros is part of the Fast & Furious universe and explores some of Dominic Toretto’s history. Diesel has also been a producer on the franchise for years, so his involvement extends far beyond playing Dom.
The franchise has also bounced between several filmmakers over its long run, with seven directors taking the wheel across the movies. Having Diesel direct the finale could be a fitting way for him to bring the series home after spending more than two decades helping shape it.
The problem is that nobody outside the production seems to know exactly what Diesel is teasing. There hasn’t been confirmation that Leterrier has departed Fast Forever, nor has Universal announced Diesel as the new director.
The Instagram post could also have nothing to do with directing the feature film. It wouldn’t be the first time one of Diesel’s Fast Forever teases sent fans in the wrong direction.
He previously appeared to suggest that production was getting underway, only for the project in question to turn out to be a World Cup promotion. Diesel has also talked enthusiastically about the screenplay, while Leterrier later said he hadn’t seen the script Diesel appeared to be referring to.
There is at least one concrete target on the calendar. Diesel recently said that the movie is expected to begin filming in December. That production window would give the team plenty of time ahead of the planned March 2028 theatrical release, assuming everything stays on schedule.
