Jackie Chan Says RUSH HOUR 4 is in Development and He's in Talks To reprise His Role
Jackie Chan recently made an appearance at the Red Sea Film Festival and while there he revealed to his fans that he is currently in talks to make Rush Hour 4. The first three Rush Hour movies were silly fun and I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Chan back in action in a new film in the franchise.
He told the audience: “We’re talking about part 4 right now,” and added that he was going to meet with the film’s director that evening to discuss the script. He did not reveal who that director is, but the first three films were helmed by Brett Ratner. I seriously doubt he’s involved, though. He hasn’t made a film since 2014, and he’s been accused by several women, including Olivia Munn, of sexual harassment and misconduct.
Chan starred in the first three Rush Hour films between 1998 and 2007 alongside comedian and actor Chris Tucker. There’s no word on if Tucker will return, but it really wouldn’t be a Rush Hour movie without him. He’s talked about a fourth movie a lot over the years, so I imagine he’ll jump on if it happens.
The franchise centers on a detective inspector from Hong Kong who teams up with a loudmouthed LAPD officer to solve a series of international crimes. Chan said that he expected the film to bomb at the box office, and was planning on quitting Hollywood, but the movie ended up being a big success.
Before Rush Hour came to Chan, he was tired of being offered roles that involved him playing an East Asian detective in America. He wanted to do more, but his agent managed to get him to do Rush Hour. He said: “My manager said look, there’s a script, and it’s called Rush Hour. I said no, Hong Kong police? I’m not going to do it. He said Jackie, why don’t you try last time. I said okay, this is the last time.”
After the first film was released, Chan said he received a call from Ratner and Tucker, who said, “Dude, we’re a huge success. We’re 70 million in the first weekend. For me, I don’t have a count of what 70 million is. I don’t know the box office. I just know it’s certainly a success. And then they made part 2 and part 3.” Now, maybe part 4!
Chan also said that he’s planning to make less action movies and is looking to make more love stories. He’s currently prepping a project which he described as a “drama film for women.” He said: “I hope very soon it can release here. It’s a drama film. And it’s made for women. I hope one day you can see it.”
Are you excited about the possibility of Rush Hour 4? What do you think of the future of Chan’s career?
