JAMES BOND 26 Release Date Update Pushes 007’s Return Further Into the Future
The wait for the next chapter in the James Bond franchise just got longer, and it’s not exactly the update fans were hoping for. After years of speculation about who will take over as 007 and when the iconic spy will return, a new report suggests that the timeline is stretching well beyond expectations.
According to The Telegraph, the next installment, currently referred to as James Bond 26, is still a long way off. The outlet reports, “What we’ll keep hearing until the next one comes out—2028 at the very earliest, but more likely to be 2029 or beyond—is that they’re waiting to get it just right.”
That kind of window means fans could be looking at close to a decade between Bond films, depending on how things shake out.
Part of the delay seems to come down to development. The same report notes that Steven Knight’s script is “nowhere near ready,” which signals that the project is still in its early creative phase.
This next film marks a major shift for the series. James Bond 26 will be the first movie made entirely under Amazon MGM Studios after the company spent $8.5 billion to acquire MGM. That investment explains why the studio isn’t rushing things. They’re looking to redefine Bond for a new era, and that kind of reset takes careful planning.
Earlier in 2025, longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson handed over creative control of the franchise to Amazon, closing a historic chapter for the Broccoli family’s stewardship of 007.
Not long after, the studio brought in Amy Pascal and David Heyman to produce the film. Pascal has deep ties to Bond, having worked on Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall, while Heyman is known for steering the massive Harry Potter franchise.
On the directing side, Denis Villeneuve is set to take the helm, which is an exciting choice. He’s currently finishing up Dune: Part Three, scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, so his Bond duties won’t fully kick in until after that film is complete.
Then there’s the question everyone keeps asking: who will be the next Bond? Nothing official has been announced, but names like Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, and Harris Dickinson continue to circulate. If the studio is aiming for a 2028 release, they’ll need to lock in their lead sooner rather than later, likely by the end of 2026.
For now, it looks like patience is the name of the game. The next era of Bond is clearly being treated as a major rebuild rather than a quick follow-up. That could pay off in a big way, but it also means fans will be waiting longer than expected to hear those iconic words on the big screen again.
