James Bond Producer Talks About the Future of the Franchise and "Reinventing" the Character

Daniel Craig had a great run as James Bond in the 007 spy franchise, but now that his time as the character has come to an end, fans have been wondering… what’s next? What does the future of James Bond look like without Craig or director Sam Mendes?

During a recent interview with The Guardian, franchise producer Barbara Broccoli just gave fans an update on how things are going, and they’ve barely scratched the surface of the next iteration of Bond, Broccoli said there's "a big road ahead" and says that the iconic character has to be "reinvented for the next chapter." She explained:

"I go back to GoldenEye when everyone was saying 'the cold war is over, the wall is over, Bond is dead, no need for Bond, the whole world's at peace and now there's no villains' – and boy was that wrong!

"Daniel gave us the ability to mine the emotional life of the character … and also the world was ready for it. I think these movies reflect the time they are in, and there's a big, big road ahead reinventing it for the next chapter and we haven't even begun with that."

As for the casting of Bond, that’s something they aren’t even close to doing yet. There have been unconfirmed reports that Christopher Nolan will be developing the next two installments of the franchise.

It’s said that EON and Amazon are “pushing for Nolan and that he's on board, in principle, unless his need for creative freedom isn’t met. There are sticking points to be ironed out in terms of tone that might scuttle things though.”

According to the rumor, EON is looking to do a full reboot of the franchise for the modern era and they want Nolan to adapt some of the classic Ian Fleming novels, “in period settings, that stick close to the original source material.” The ultimate goal is for Nolan to do three Bond films, and have him on board as an Executive Producer on the franchise moving forward.

A lot of fans hope that these rumors are true, but only time will tell, and it seems like it’s going to be awhile before we actually get any concrete answers regarding what’s going on with the franchise.
