James Cameron Consulted on ALIEN: ROMULUS Script and Discussed the Ship’s Engine Sizes with Director Fede Álvarez

Director Fede Álvarez had a lot of help from Alien director Ridley Scott and Aliens director James Cameron while crafting his Alien: Rumolus movie.

They were very supportive of his vision for the film and Scott is an executive producer on it, and he’s the one that helped Álvarez push the film into production.

It turns out that Cameron also consulted on the script as he jumped on an "extensive" phone call with Álvarez and Alien: Romulus co-writer Rodo Sayagues where they discussed also kind of little details about the franchise.

The conversation even included the size of the engines on the film’s ships! He went on to say: "At the end of the phone call, he thanked us for letting him brainstorm with us, which I found hilarious. I was like, 'You don’t have to thank us; it’s the best day ever for us!'"

When talking about the film, Álvarez described it as "an amalgamation of Alien and Aliens on many levels". They even used animatronic creature effects to bring the xenomorph creatures to life.

Álvarez went on to explain: "The environments, and the pace of it as well – it’s more similar to Alien for quite a bit, and then gradually – you won’t even know – you feel like it’s more Aliens. It’s a natural progression, and it happens effortlessly."

Alien: Romulus follows a “group of young people on a distant world who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

The story is set between Ridley Scott’s Alien and Cameron’s Aliens and the same team that worked on Aliens returned to work on this movie.

The director previously explained: “My first instinct, just to try something different that hasn't been seen before, was to approach it from the angle of characters who are not professionals or scientists; they're not even adults.

“I liked this concept of putting people in the front seat of the story who are closer to what the audience is — not that the audience is young, more that the audience is completely virgin to the realities of space.

“When the characters are professionals, they know more than you do. But when they’re still in their early 20s, they don’t know how to operate the f–ing airlock.”

The movie stars Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and newcomer Aileen Wu.

Alvarez is directing from his script written by Rodo Sayagues. Ridley Scott is also a producer on the movie along with Michael Pruss (Boston Strangler) for Scott Free, with Brent O’Connor (Bullet Train), Elizabeth Cantillon (Persuasion) and Tom Moran (The Donut King) serving as executive producers.

Alien: Romulus is set to hit theaters on August 16th.
