James Cameron Explains How Modern Technology Influenced His Return to the TERMINATOR Franchise

The Terminator franchise has hit a rough patch. Its movies aren't the worst... but they don't live up to the standards they set initially. The unique thoughts on the future and interesting ideas of a killer robot from the future. But James Cameron wants to come back and fix that and as we previously reported he's planning to reinvent the franchise with a new trilogy.

One main reason he hasn't been involved with the series as of late is because of the rights issues. But, the rights will be returning to Cameron in 2019 and James Cameron apparently has some ideas he wants to push forward. Recently, Cameron talked to IGN and he explained why he is looking to return to the franchise:

"A lot of the things that were science fiction in Terminator are now around us. You know, from predator drones and actual discussions on the ethics of having a robot have its own kill decision possibilities. Things like that. It's actually happening. So, okay, maybe there is room for a film that examines these themes. It just has to be retooled for an audience."

So instead of retreading over old ground again and again, Cameron wants to do something new with the franchise. I'm listening. Currently, ideas for the new Terminator trilogy are being brainstormed with Deadpool director Tim Miller, who will probably end up directing at least one of the films in the trilogy.

James Cameron is not one of my favorite story-tellers, but he is a great innovator of film. What he has been able to do to push us forward has been incredible from his use of state of the art special effects in film to proper use 3D technology, he has done some amazing things. If anything can be expected, at least the movie will be entertaining and look freaking cool. I do however like the idea of focusing on the reality of how sci-fi is no long fiction as much as it is a reality. Having a Terminator movie tackle issues that have yet to be raised would definitely be interesting to see.

Thoughts? Are you excited that James Cameron is jumping back on board the Terminator franchise?
