James Cameron Says He “Can’t Wait” For The GODZILLA MINUS ONE Sequel and Even Wants to Help Make It Happen

James Cameron is riding a wave of excitement for the sequel to Takashi Yamazaki’s Oscar winning kaiju hit Godzilla Minus One, and he’s so fired up about it that he’s already volunteering to step behind the camera.

The filmmaker recently appeared in Japan to introduce his upcoming film Avatar: Fire and Ash, and during the event he shared the stage with Yamazaki.

Their conversation turned into a wonderfully fun moment between two filmmakers who clearly admire each other, and Cameron didn’t hold back his enthusiasm for the return of the King of the Monsters.

“I can't wait to see Minus Two,” Cameron said during his introduction for Avatar: Fire and Ash. “Yamazaki-san came here from the set early just to be here, so I'm deeply honored by that and I offered that, if he gets a little bit behind, I can come and do some second unit.”

Yamazaki shot back with a playful warning. “You'll end up taking my job from me if you do!” he joked.

“I'm sure you've got it under control,” Cameron laughed.

The friendly exchange is pretty awesome to see given how Godzilla Minus One took the world by surprise in 2023. Set in post war Japan, the story follows former kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima, played by Ryunosuke Kamiki, who battles overwhelming survivor’s guilt while joining the crew of a minesweeping vessel.

Their mission puts them straight in the path of Godzilla, creating one of the most emotional and grounded entries the franchise has ever seen. The film made history as the first non English language movie to win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, a feat that instantly raised anticipation for whatever Yamazaki would do next.

That next chapter, titled Godzilla Minus Zero, is scheduled to arrive in late 2026. Kamiki is expected to return as Kōichi, and Minami Hamabe will once again play Noriko. Nothing about the plot has surfaced yet, keeping fans in eager suspense as the project quietly moves forward.

Meanwhile Cameron is deep into his own epic universe with Avatar: Fire and Ash. This new chapter follows Jake and Neytiri as they confront the Mangkwan, a Na’vi tribe connected to Jake’s ongoing conflict with Quaritch. The film is set to hit theaters on December 19.

I love that Cameron offered to jump in on the Godzilla project and help make the movie. That would be wild if it happened, but it most likely wont.
