James Cameron’s Wife Cried for Four Hours After Watching AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH - “She Kept Trying to Get Her Sh*t Back Together”
James Cameron is no stranger to crafting emotional, immersive cinematic experiences, but even he wasn’t prepared for how Avatar: Fire and Ash would affect his wife, Suzy Amis Cameron.
In a recent chat with Empire, Cameron talked about the first time she saw the film, an early cut he showed her last December. Her reaction was pure, unfiltered emotion. So much so that she couldn’t stop crying.
Cameron explained: “My wife watched the whole thing from end to end. She had kept herself away from it and I wasn’t showing her bits and pieces as we went along. This was Dec. 22.
“She bawled for four hours. She kept trying to get her shit back together so she could tell me specific reactions, and then she’d just tear up and start crying again. Finally, I’m like, ‘Honey, I’ve got to go to bed. Sorry, we’ll talk about it some other time.’”
That’s a pretty intense response after watching a movie, and this third Avatar movie must really pull at heartstrings. While Cameron didn’t reveal exactly what triggered such an emotional response, he’s previously hinted that Fire and Ash will take audiences on an even more personal and high-stakes journey than The Way of Water.
Cameron previously said: “You’ll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before. It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before. We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”
Cameron also confirmed the next chapter of Avatar will be even longer than The Way of Water, which clocked in at three hours and 12 minutes. I’m sure he’s packing every extra minute with rich world-building, stunning visuals, and tear-endusing emotional weight.
Cameron previously shared: “I've shown it to a few selected people and the feedback has been it's definitely the most emotional and maybe the best of the three so far.”
This third installment brings back Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang as the saga returns to Pandora. This time, the story will introduce the Ash People, a new Na’vi faction tied to the planet’s volcanic regions. It looks like a darker, more intense chapter in the Avatar universe.
Avatar: Fire and Ash lands in theaters on December 19, 2025.
