James Gunn Calls Out “BS” Rumors About MAN OF TOMORROW, THE BATMAN PART II, and More DC Projects
James Gunn has had his fill of the ridiculous rumors surrounding DC Studios, and he’s calling out some of the latest claims making the rounds online. This time, the rumors involve Man of Tomorrow, The Batman: Part II, and Milly Alcock’s future as Supergirl. Gunn isn't entertaining any of it, and he made that pretty clear.
The filmmaker, who runs DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, recently responded to a fan on Threads who brought up three concerning rumors about upcoming DC projects.
One claimed that Matt Reeves was leaving The Batman: Part II entirely. Another suggested that Alcock wouldn’t continue playing Supergirl in the DCU. The third alleged that Man of Tomorrow had received a negative reaction at a test screening because a major character was killed off.
Gunn quickly shut down all three claims and offered fans some advice about believing everything they read online.
He wrote: “Oh brother. You guys just have to stop listening to BS, and I'm mostly done shooting down rumors as there are so many and I'm not on here much. But all three of these couldn't be more false. I'm showing PETER SAFRAN my first Director's Cut today - he's the first person to see it obviously - and that's a month early!”
Well, that pretty much clears things up! The Man of Tomorrow rumor is particularly ridiculous considering Gunn's update on the film. If Safran is only now getting his first look at the director's cut, it's hard to imagine how a disastrous test screening involving a major character's death could have already taken place.
It's also interesting to hear that Gunn has his first director's cut ready a full month ahead of schedule. That's certainly an encouraging update for fans looking forward to the next chapter of Superman's story.
As for The Batman: Part II, there have been some legitimate production complications, but Reeves isn't abandoning the movie.
Filming was recently paused while Reeves attended to a family matter. It was then reported that Steven Soderbergh would oversee the remaining principal photography while staying in close contact with Reeves.
Reeves himself has also made it clear that he's “not leaving” the project and plans to return to a hands-on role during post-production. So, while the production has experienced some unexpected changes, the idea that Reeves has completely walked away simply isn't true.
Then there's the rumor about Alcock's future as Supergirl. Following the disappointing box office performance of Supergirl, speculation has apparently started circulating that the actress won't continue playing Kara Zor-El after she deleted a bunch of Supergirl posts from her Instagram.
However, Alcock is already confirmed to reprise the role in Man of Tomorrow, and Gunn's response makes it clear that fans shouldn't put much stock in claims that she's being replaced. What happens with the character beyond that film remains to be seen.
This also isn't the first time Gunn has had to deal with questionable DC rumors. Earlier this year, he dismissed some Man of Tomorrow casting reports as “crazy” and previously shot down speculation involving The Brave and the Bold and the Waller series.
He's also had some fun with fans asking about a director's cut of Superman, showing that he can have a sense of humor about some of the stranger questions that come his way.
Still, you can understand why the constant stream of misinformation would get exhausting. There are plenty of legitimate things happening at DC Studios worth talking about without inventing production disasters, secret casting changes, or imaginary test screenings.
Gunn seems to be reaching the point where he'd rather focus on making movies than spend his time correcting every wild claim that pops up online, which is what he should be doing! You don’t see Kevin Fiege constantly on social media debunking rumors.
But, I understands that It's got to be frustrating watching false information spread about projects you're actively working on, especially when some of those claims can be disproven with a simple production update.
Of course, that probably won't stop the next round of crazy DC rumors from hitting the internet.
