James Gunn Confirms THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD Script Still Isn’t Finished and Fans Won’t Love the Wait

Fans hoping the DCU’s Dark Knight was closer to stepping into the spotlight just got a bit of a reality check. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, shared a blunt update on the status of the upcoming Batman movie, and it’s probably not what anyone wanted to hear.

The film, The Brave and the Bold, is the DCU’s planned introduction of Batman and his son Damian Wayne as Robin, with Andy Muschietti attached to direct. Muschietti, best known for It, has been developing the project for a while, but real progress has been tough to track.

That slow movement became crystal clear when Gunn responded to a fan on Threads who asked about a rumor claiming the script was done and that the movie was targeting a 2028 release. Gunn shut that down quickly, writing:

"Fiction, sorry. Screenplay isn't finished."

While disappointing, the comment lines up with what Gunn has been saying for months. Updates on The Brave and the Bold have been few and far between, and Gunn has been open about that reality. Speaking last July ahead of the release of Superman, he explained:

"There's really no new updates. I mean, we're working on a script. We have a screenwriter who's hammering away at it. I'm very involved, and so, you know, we'll see what happens next. I wish I had more news for you, but I don't."

So while the DCU Batman is still taking shape on the page, the character won’t be absent from theaters. The Batman: Part II, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson, is scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.

The sequel’s cast is growing, with Sebastian Stan joining as Harvey Dent and Scarlett Johansson set to appear in a still-unknown role. Colin Farrell is also back as the Penguin, though only for a handful of scenes.

This version of Batman exists outside the DCU as an Elseworlds story and has no direct connection to Gunn and Peter Safran’s shared universe.

Looking ahead, the DCU’s next major step arrives with Supergirl, the first solo movie for Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. After that, the universe expands to TV with Lanterns, an HBO series centered on the Green Lantern Corps.

As for Batman’s DCU debut, patience is still the name of the game. Gunn clearly wants to get it right, even if that means fans are stuck waiting a little longer in the shadows.
