James Gunn Continues To Prove He's a Great Choice To Run DC Studios - "It’s Always Gonna Be Quality First"
James Gunn is currently in the process of building a whole new DC Cinematic Universe for Warner Bros. and he’s deep in production on Superman, the film that will launch this whole new creative vision.
Gunn was recently asked on Threads about the The Authority film and what the timeline is for it. The filmmaker’s response continues to prove that Gunn is the right choice to be leading the charge at DC Studios. He’s running things in a very different way than Marvel Studios. His response was:
“We won’t green light a film until we have a finished script we’re happy with and, in general, we won’t cast a film until the script is finished. This is why some projects are moving faster than anticipated and others more slowly. It’s always gonna be quality first no matter what.”
This is the complete opposite way that Marvel operates. For a lot of their films, they don’t have a completed script before the cast is hired, or the film even starts shooting. It’s crazy! I’ve always said that shooting these films would be so much better and production would run so much more smoothly if they actually had a solid script in place before they start shooting. So, it’s great to see that Gunn actually has that common sense that he’s implementing it in his development plans.
Gunn and Peter Safran previously revealed that an Authority movie was in the works when they announced the first slate of projects that would make up Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters.
Gunn said as the time: “The Authority is a passion project of mine. It’s based on the marvelous WildStorm characters we are now bringing into the DCU. [They] will interact with all of our primary DCU characters. The Authority are a group of superheroes who think the world is broken and they want to fix it by any means necessary. I think it’s a very different look at superheroes.”
A release date for The Authority has not yet been set, and the creative team working on the project has not yet been announced. Other projects in development include Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing. As for the TV project, we’ve got Waller, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, and Peacemaker Season 2.
