The Story for SUPERMAN: LEGACY Is Set in a World Where Superheroes Already Exist

We recently offered an update on the current situation with casting James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy. The finalists seem to be Nicholas Hoult, Tom Brittney, and David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan, Phoebe Dynevor, and Emma Mackey as Lois Lane. They have all done screen tests, and a decision is expected to be made by the end of the week.

There was a bit of additional information included in the report that I wanted to point out. Gunn is looking to cast additional superheroes in the movie, specifically, a supergroup named The Authority. The report then says that “part of the new storyline is Superman joining a world in which superheroes already exist.”

This is an interesting concept to play with, and it’s one that isn’t really a part of Superman’s origin. However, this idea was effectively played with the classic series Smallville, and Clark met up with them over the course of his story. So, it seems like Gunn is taking a page from Smallville.

When it comes to The Authority, there was a film project initially announced when Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled their first wave of DC project. It was explained at the time:

“They’re great Wildstorm characters that were incredibly popular for a long time, and we're incorporating them into the DCU and one of the things with the DCU is it isn't just a story of heroes and villains and not every movie and TV show is going to be about good guy versus bad guy, giant thing from the sky comes and the good guy wins. There are black hats white hats and gray hats. There are people that are anti-heroes, and there are people that are very, questionable, like the authority, who basically believe that you can't fix the world in an easy manner, and they sort of take things into their own hands. They take the authority and they start to do what they think is the right thing.

So, these characters will be introduced in Superman: Legacy. In the comics, “After Stormwatch disbanded, the three members of Stormwatch Black went on to become The Authority. The leader of this team was Jenny Sparks and it included Swift and Hawksmoor (SW: Black), Apollo and Midnighter (two creations of Henry Bendix rescued by Stormwatch), The Engineer and The Doctor (both of whom were people who had received the powers of Changers of the same name). The team had been gathered by Jenny who had also found The Carrier, the ship that would become their base of operations.” Also in the comics, the team is recruited by Superman to take on Warworld and the tyrant Mongul.

It’ll be interesting to see how Gunn implements The Authority into his Superman story, but it’s definitely going to set up other things within the DC Cinematic universe that he’s building. I’m excited about it! What are your thoughts on Gunn’s plan to have Superman join a world that already has superheroes?
