James Gunn Just Put MAN OF TOMORROW in the Same Conversation as His Most Iconic Action Scenes

James Gunn recently talked about his favorite action sequences in the films he’s made. The filmmaker has delivered some unforgettable superhero set pieces over the years, and a recent comment about Man of Tomorrow suggests the upcoming DC sequel could feature action moments worthy of standing alongside some of his best work.

During a conversation with fans on Threads, Gunn reflected on several sequences from his past projects that still rank among his personal favorites. The list included Yondu’s devastating Ravager hallway assault in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the impressive one-shot battle sequence from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the massive collapsing building sequence in The Suicide Squad, and the climactic butterfly battle from the Peacemaker finale. He also gave a nod to Harcourt’s brutal bar fight from the second season premiere of Peacemaker.

The conversation also touched on one of the standout action moments from The Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn’s stylish escape sequence. Gunn said:

“Thanks. It’s one of my favorites. We had a lot of fun doing it. And yes, that’s really Margot unlocking the lock with her toes.”

That scene remains a fan favorite thanks to its creative visuals and chaotic energy, which has become one of Gunn’s trademarks as a filmmaker.

Things got more interesting when fans asked if anything from Man of Tomorrow might eventually earn a place on that same list of favorite action scenes. Gunn’s response was short, but it carried a lot of weight:

“Yeah, there are a couple of possibilities in this film.”

For longtime fans of Gunn’s work, that’s an exciting statement. He wasn’t comparing the sequel to just any action scenes. He was talking about sequences that have become some of the most celebrated moments from his superhero filmography.

The fact that he already sees “a couple of possibilities” in Man of Tomorrow suggests the movie could deliver some truly memorable action on a massive scale.

The anticipation surrounding the sequel is already high. Man of Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027, with David Corenswet returning as the Man of Steel.

Gunn previously shared artwork featuring Superman facing off against Lex Luthor in his powerful Warsuit armor, teasing a clash that could be every bit as epic as fans are hoping.

The project gained momentum after Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed that Gunn would return to write and direct the sequel following the success of Superman. The film brought in more than $611 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year.

Before audiences get to see what Gunn has planned for Man of Tomorrow, the new DC Universe still has plenty on the horizon. Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, is on the way, along with the horror-inspired Clayface movie as DC Studios continues building out its interconnected franchise.

There’s no doubt that Man of Tomorrow is going to features some incredibly fun and inventive action scenes, and I can’t wait to see what they are.
