James Gunn Responds To MR. FREEZE Movie Rumors
There have recently been rumors of a Mr. Freeze film project in development at DC Studios. That report originated at Production Weekly, and it’s said the story would be set in the same world as The Batman and The Penguin.
This rumor comes as there have also been reports of The Batman: Part II being set in the winter, so people are thinking that a spinoff revolving around Dr. Victor Fries is something that could happen.
So, what does DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn have to say about it? When he was asked about the rumor on social media, he talked about rumors in general.
He said: "I haven’t heard that one but there are a lot of rumors out there this week. Some of them are true, some are partially true, and some aren't true at all.
“If it’s fun for you to follow the unknowns, follow them, but don’t trust anything completely until you hear it from me or Peter (who is not online despite me seeing him tagged in stuff.)"
When talking about a possible Mr. Freeze project, Gunn later clarified, "It’s not a bad idea, so I wouldn’t say never but no there’s no truth to it at all."
Mr. Freeze is one of my favorite Batman villains because he has such a tragic story that makes him such a compelling character.
My favorite version of the Mr. Freeze story is the one that came out of Batman: The Animated Series. His story was just told in such a beautiful way.
In the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Heart of Ice," the tragic story of Dr. Victor Fries, also known as Mr. Freeze, is introduced. Once a brilliant cryogenicist, Fries turns to a life of crime after an experiment meant to save his terminally ill wife, Nora, goes horribly wrong.
His corporate employer, Ferris Boyle, cuts funding for the project and sabotages the lab, leaving Fries physically altered—unable to survive outside sub-zero temperatures.
Seeking revenge against Boyle and to finish his research to save Nora, Mr. Freeze embarks on a path of destruction in Gotham, using his freeze technology to carry out his vendetta.
Batman becomes aware of the situation and eventually uncovers the depths of Fries' personal tragedy. After a series of confrontations, Batman thwarts Mr. Freeze’s attempts at vengeance, but not without gaining sympathy for his plight.
In the end, Fries is sent to Arkham Asylum, where he mournfully reflects on his lost humanity and his eternal longing to be reunited with Nora.
