James Gunn Reveals Stan Lee's Planned Cameo in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3
When James Gunn originally wrote the script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he made sure to include a cameo for Stan Lee. The filmmaker has now revealed the character that was originally intended to be played by Lee before he passed away.
Lee was going to play the character Lambshank, which is the role that James Gunn himself stepped in to play in the movie. Gunn shared this bit of information in the film’s director’s commentary, saying:
"I originally wrote Lambshank, the character that I played, for Stan Lee because I wrote the movie before Stan passed on. I knew he was also getting much older and it'd be harder to bring him to Atlanta to shoot, so I did a character that I could just animate and then have him do the voice and have a little Stan Lee-like face on that character. But unfortunately, Stan passed, who I really enjoyed working with and directing so many times through these movies."
Lambshank is one of the High Evolutionary’s genetic creature experiments that the Guardians team encounters while saving the Star Children. In the film, when Mantis opened the gate to Lambshank's cage she was briefly terrified by its appearance, and she says: "I was screaming at something scary behind you, not you. You look really cool..."
That would have been a very different kind of cameo for Lee! It definitely would have been interesting to see.
