James Gunn Says His SUPERMAN: LEGACY Movie Doesn't Necessarily Rule Out J.J. Abrams' Superman Project

New heads of DC, James Gunn and Peter Safran, have rolled out the opening slate for their upcoming DC Universe films. Among the rollout is the James Gunn-directed film, Superman: Legacy, which will reboot the Man of Steel franchise. One concern that some people voiced when this news was debuted, was that it felt like the other Superman projects that were running the rumor mills over the past few years seemed to be dead in the water. Namely, the reported Ta-Nehisi Coates-written and J.J. Abrams-produced take on Superman.

However, speaking with Gizmodo this weekend, Gunn confirmed that just because his Superman movie is coming, doesn’t mean that one is completely off the board.

“Those two things are totally unrelated. That’s an exciting movie. I know that Chantal Nong, who is the executive on that project, is extremely excited about it. So if it comes in and it’s great, which I haven’t read the script, and if the timing is right, that could absolutely happen. That’s totally unrelated. It would be an Elseworlds tale like Joker.”

So while that movie wouldn’t fit into the plans of DC, it could still exist in a world of its own. It was previously reported that “Coates is crafting a Kal-El in the vein of the original Superman comics and will have the protagonist hail from Krypton and come to Earth. While the story is currently being crafted and many details could change, one option under consideration is for the film to be a 20th century period piece.”

When previously talking about the project Coates said, “To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor. I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”

While J.J. Abrams said, “There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity.”
