James Gunn Says That THE SUICIDE SQUAD Had Zero Interference From The Studio
It’s super rare for directors to be able to make their films without any kind of interference from the studio. Especially when it comes to big-budget superhero films. Very few directors are actually given real creative freedom with the films they make. Marvel, Warner Bros., DC, and Lucasfilm have all controlled how a director makes a film based on one of their properties.
Well, when it came to James Gunn and The Suicide Squad, the studio stayed away and let him do exactly what he wanted to do. The director explained on Twitter recently that he had “100% zero interference” with his work.
He also confirmed that we’ll be getting our first look at the movie during the film’s panel at the upcoming DC FanDome. Here’s what he said:
“I can confirm The Suicide Squad is 100%, zero interference, no-holds-barred ME, &, again, I can't wait for you guys to get a glimpse of it at DC FanDome.”
Gunn also teased that the rating for the film will also be revealed during the DC event, which is set to take place on August 22nd.
The story for Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is still very much shrouded in secrecy. We don’t know much at all, but we do know there will be several new DC characters making their big-screen debuts. Jai Courtney also previously talked about how he adjusted to Gunn’s approach to The Suicide Squad and explained that the movie is going to have a different flavor than the first movie. He said:
“I think it’s kind of got a different flavor. There’s a whole bunch of new characters. James Gunn has an approach to things that is uniquely his; he pulls a lot of that into the Suicide Squad world. And I think that it fits really well, and audiences are going to have a lot of fun with it.”
The Suicide Squad cast also includes Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson, Idris Elba, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker, David Dastmalchian, Storm Reid, Taika Waititi and John Cena.
The film is set for release on August 6th, 2021.
