James Gunn Shares Photo of Finished MAN OF TOMORROW Script and Hints at Brainiac as the Sequel's Villain

Director James Gunn confirmed just weeks ago that his Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow is in the works, and should be expected on July 9, 2027.

His first film set a pretty high bar for this new era of DC storytelling, and fans are anxious to see what is in store for our Clark Kent and his company. In a new social media post, Gunn revealed a photo of the cover of his script for the second film, and with its title, we also see an anatomical photo of a person’s head with their brain inside. Could this be a quiet confirmation that Superman’s new villain will be Brainiac?

Brainiac is commonly depicted as a super-intelligent android or cyborg from the planet Colu who is obsessed with collecting all knowledge in the known universe. He travels the galaxy and shrinks cities to bottle size for preservation on his skull-shaped spaceship before destroying their source planets, including Kandor, the capital of Superman's home planet Krypton.

Regarded as one of the most dangerous threats in the DC Universe, Brainiac has come into repeated conflict with Superman and the Justice League. Although stories often end in Brainiac's apparent destruction, the character's artificial consciousness is resurrected in new physical forms, some robotic and others more organic-based in appearance.

Gunn explained in recent interview with Howard Stern, that this next story will see Superman and Lex Luthor teaming up against a much bigger foe, saying:

"It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat. It’s more complicated than that but that’s a big part of it. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.

“I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.”

On social media, Gunn shared, "As I've said countless times, you can watch every project by itself, of course (just like you can watch Peacemaker by itself or watch Superman without seeing Creature Commandos). But Man of Tomorrow and [Peacemaker season 2] are very, very connected."
