James Gunn Teases Peacemaker’s Hatred of Superman Will Shape the DCU

James Gunn has confirmed that Peacemaker’s grudge against Superman isn’t just a throwaway gag, it’s going to play a role in the bigger picture of the DCU.

While recording the director’s commentary for Superman, which is now available digitally, Gunn pointed out a key moment from the film involving John Cena’s Peacemaker.

During the scene where Chris Smith shows up on a talk show to trash Kal-El, Gunn explained, "A moment that gets a big reaction every time I watch it with a crowd, which is the reveal of my friend John Cena as Peacemaker. And Peacemaker is not a fan of Superman, obviously, and that's going to be important in the future, actually."

That tease connects directly to Peacemaker Season 2, which is currently rolling out weekly on HBO Max. Cena’s character is back in action, and Gunn has already revealed that fans should expect some crossover with Superman’s corner of the DCU.

In fact, he confirmed that several characters from Superman will show up in the Season 2 finale. Whether or not David Corenswet’s Man of Steel is one of them is still under wraps, but the possibility is definitely there.

Whatever happens, Gunn and the cast have hinted at a massive payoff. Jennifer Holland, who plays Emilia Harcourt, has promised that the finale won’t be short on impact. "A lot happens. A lot is revealed. A lot of consequences," she teased. The finale isn’t arriving until October 9, but it sounds like the wait will be worth it.

With Superman setting the stage and Peacemaker pushing deeper into this new era of DC storytelling, fans are about to see just how important that rivalry between Peacemaker and the Man of Steel really is.
