James Gunn Tells DC Fans He's Open to Everything and Looking to Tell the "Biggest Story Ever Told"
As James Gunn and Peter Safran are hard at work planning the future of DC films and TV shows, the fans on Twitter have been hitting them up with requests and suggestions of things that they’d like to see with the direction of DC’s future. Some of the things they’ve asked for is for him to save Legends of Tomorrow after it was canceled, and they also want to see the "Ayer Cut" of director David Ayer's Suicide Squad released.
Gunn ended up jumping on Twitter to address all of the fans and the requests that they’ve been making and he wanted to make a point of saying that he is listening and that he is open to everything. Here’s what he said in his thread:
"Opened up Twitter at the end of a long, creative weekend to see the many tweets to #SaveLegendsofTomorrow & #ReleaseTheAyerCut & fan support for other DC projects over the years. The majority of these requests were enthusiastic & respectful.
“As the new (& first ever) CEOs of DC Studios, Peter & I think it's important we acknowledge you, the fans, & let you know we hear your different desires for the pathways forward for DC. Although our ability to interact on Twitter has been lessened due to the workload of our new positions, we are listening & open to everything as we embark on this journey, & will continue to do so for the next few years."
Gunn then went on to tease what he’s currently working on with Safran at the moment for the DC Cinematic Universe saying that they are looking to tell the biggest story ever told across multiple films! He said:
"But all our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, & telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects. We invite all of the DC fandoms from across the multiverse – and everyone else as well – into this new universe. We can't wait to reveal more."
Well, hell! With him saying that, I could really care less about bringing Legends of Tomorrow back and Releasing the Ayer Cut. No need to look back to the past at this point, I’m excited about moving forward and seeing what he’s going to give us with this “Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects.” Bring it on! That’s what I want to see!
It was previously explained that Gunn will “focus on the creative side, while Safran will focus on the business and production side of things. Both are expected to continue to direct and produce projects, respectively.”
Gunn and Safran said in a statement: “We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children. We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”
Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav previously teased what’s coming and shared that running DC Studios is a passion project for Gunn and Safran, and not just a job:
"[For them], running DC Studios is a passion project, not just a job. James is a brilliant storyteller who has the distinction of being the first and only filmmaker to direct the movie for both Marvel and DC. Peter's a prolific producer whose credits include DC's highest grossing movie, Aquaman, as well as the entire Conjuring universe, the most successful horror franchise of all time. I could not be more thrilled to have them join our ranks. And I'm excited for what is to come. I spent a lot of time over the last few months with James and Peter, talking about our strategy and long-term plans for the future of DC across TV, animation, and film. They have a powerful vision and blueprint that will drive a more unified creative approach. [It] will enable us to realize the full value of one of the world's most iconic franchises. They're hard at work right now."
That’s a very encouraging statement, one that is sure to get fans stoked about the future of DC. Gunn recently celebrated starting his new position with an amusing post on social media. His post features a comic panel of Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman, working at his typewriter, remarking, "Got to restrain myself... or I may absent-mindedly punch this typewriter into twisted wreckage!" Gunn captioned the photo, "First day, new job."
