James Gunn Was Offered the Chance to Direct "Some Sort of SUPERMAN Movie" But Turned It Down for THE SUICIDE SQUAD
When James Gunn met with Warner Bros. about directing a DC movie after he was fired by Marvel and Disney, the studio offered him whatever he wanted. But it turns out that the studio did pitch a Superman movie to him in the process, a film that he ultimately turned down because The Suicide Squad was where his real interests were.
During a recent conversation with fans on Instagram, Gunn explained:
"As has been reported many times, DC offered me whatever film I wanted to do, including some sort of Superman movie (not specifically Man of Steel 2 as I've seen reported). I chose The Suicide Squad because it's one of my favorite properties in the world. It's the story I wanted to tell more than any other."
That’s an interestingly vague description of the Superman film he gave. It’s “some sort of Superman movie” and is “specifically not Man of Steel 2.” Obviously the studio is looking to move away from what they’ve already done with Henry Cavill’s Superman and try something different and new.
I imagine that Superman project has something to do with the one that involves Michael B. Jordan, who was confirmed to have met with WB about playing the character. At this point, we have no idea what DC and WB are currently looking to do with Superman, but I’m sure that they’ll eventually figure it out.
While it would have been interesting to see Gunn make a Superman movie, I’m excited to see what he ends up delivering with The Suicide Squad.
