James Gunn's THE SUICIDE SQUAD Confirmed To Be a "Total Reboot"

When it was first announced that James Gunn was writing and directing The Suicide Squad, it was said that “Gunn’s focus is to take the franchise in a new direction with a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors. Sources also say that the project is also very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the Guardians movies.”

One thing that has been made very clear is that this is not going to be a sequel to the first film. Even though there has been talk of bringing back some original cast members like Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, producer Peter Safran has confirmed that the new movie will be a “total reboot”.

During an interview with JoBlo, the interviewer referred to the film as “Suicide Squad 2”, and Safran was quick to correct the mistake and explain that this will be a hard reboot of the franchise.

"First of all, we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ‘cause it’s a total reboot. So it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it. It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot."

With that being said, I assume that means the events of the first film will have never happened in this new one and they will never be acknowledged. While some fans enjoyed the first film, I think a lot of DC fans won’t have a problem with a hard reboot.

The producer goes on to address Gunn coming back to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and says that as of right now, The Suicide Squad is his priority.

"It was all handled incredibly elegantly and everybody knows on both sides that Suicide Squad is the priority today and he’ll finish that movie and then everybody knows that his next film will be Guardians. It’s the best of all possible both worlds, I think, for fans and for James Gunn himself."

Idris Elba was recently cast in the role of Deadshot in the film, which everyone seemed to be excited about! There’s also a possible character roster for the story that has been revealed as well, which you can read about here.

I don’t know about you, but I’m pumped for this movie! It’s set to hit theaters on August 6th, 2021.
