James Mangold Describes His SWAMP THING Movie as a Frankenstein-Like Gothic Horror Movie
Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold is currently developing a Swamp Thing movie for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios. As a big long-time fan of Swamp Thing, I’m incredibly excited to see how he brings this story to life!
Now, the filmmaker has opened up about the project and teased his vision for it, saying that it will be a standalone film that he describes as a “very simple, clean, Gothic horror movie.” He told Variety:
"While I'm sure DC views Swamp Thing as a franchise, I would be viewing it as a very simple, clean, Gothic horror movie about this man/monster... Just doing my own thing with this, just a standalone."
Mangold added that he's been "toying for years with the idea of making a kind of Frankenstein movie," for years before teaming up with James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, and this Swamp Thing movie is going to be that. Mangold is a big fan of Swamp Thing, and this has been a film project that he’s been chasing for a while.
When previously talking about bringing Mangold on to direct the movie, Gunn said: “Of course when we started charting the course for the DCU one of the first people I talked to was the super talented James Mangold about writing and directing his passion project Swamp Thing.”
Gunn also previously said of the film project: “Because we want to point out that these stories, although they're interconnected, they're not all totally the same. So each set of filmmakers brings their own aesthetic to these films. And the fun is seeing how these totally different works will mash-up in the future. So it investigates the dark origins of swamp thing So, totally very different than Superman or Batman or Robin etc.”
What are your thoughts on what Mangold had to say about his Swamp Thing movie?
