James Mangold Responds to Negative Reviews of INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY
While a lot of critics and fans love Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the movie is still seeing a good amount of negative reviews. Having seen the film, I totally can see why people don’t like it, but I enjoyed the movie and had a ton of fun watching it! It really does take Harrison Ford’s iconic character on an insane adventure and that adventure is driven by some emotional things going on in Jones’ life.
Director James Mangold recently gave an interview with Variety, and when asked about the negative reviews that the film has been getting, he said:
“When you’re in franchise land, it’s very hard for critical thinkers” — meaning journalists — “to overlook what I’m sure their editors want, which is this business prism of how does it rate to the other ones? I always thought if I were second or third best to one of the greatest films of all time, I’d be good. I mean, it all vaporizes later. Either the movie will live or it won’t.”
I don’t really care what the critics think, I’m more interested in seeing how the audience and fans respond with the movie actually hits theaters. While I’ve already seen the movie, I’m definitely going to see it again in a theater filled with fans because that’s the experience I enjoy most about the movies!
Ford returns to the role of the legendary hero archaeologist for this final installment of the iconic franchise-- a big, globe-trotting, rip-roaring cinematic adventure. The story is set in 1969 during the Space Race, and Indiana Jones is pulled into another grand adventure, which involves Voller, a NASA member and ex-Nazi involved with the Moon landing program, who wants to "rectify the world and make it into a better place as he sees fit." He’s looking to correct the mistakes that Hitler made when he was in power with the Dial of Destiney artifact.
The movie also stars Mads Mikkelsen (Rogue One), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Shaunette Renée Wilson (The Resident), and Thomas Kretschmann (Avengers: Age Of Ultron).
The film will open in theaters on June 30, 2023.
