Jason Isaacs Says Meryl Streep Should Play Lucius Malfoy in HBO’s HARRY POTTER Series: “She Can Do Anything”

While audiences have been enjoying Jason Isaacs in HBO’s The White Lotus Season 3, he’ll always be Lucius Malfoy to a lot of Harry Potter fans. So when Variety asked him who should take up the mantle in the upcoming Harry Potter series reboot, he didn’t hesitate… and his answer was surprising.

“Meryl Streep,” Isaacs said. “She can do anything, that woman. There's literally no limit to what she can do.”

Not exactly what you’d expect, but after a beat, it could work. We’ve seen Streep be cold, calculating, and terrifying in projects like The Devil Wears Prada, Into the Woods, The Iron Lady, and her absurdly wide range. I guess it could work if swapped Lucius out with his wife Narcissa Malfoy, and gave her that villainous role.

At this point there are only two actors confirmed for the reboot and they include Jon Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

The series is planned to stretch across seven seasons, each adapting a book from J.K. Rowling’s original saga. So there’s still time for wild casting swings if the creative team decides to go that route.

Isaacs also recently reflected on his time making the original films. “They weren’t that much fun to make,” he admitted, adding that it's “quite boring making big special effects films.” But what stuck with him wasn’t the process, it was the impact.

“However the pleasures all come afterwards. I see and meet people for whom their lives were changed by it, and still people reading it and sharing it with their children. Some people say their lives were saved by it and I believe them.”

As of right now, we’ll just have to wait and see what the creative team behind the series has planned and who they will cast in the role of Lucius Malfoy, but I doubt it we’ll see Streep wielding a wand as Lucius Malfoy.
