Jason Momoa Enlists for Sony’s HELLDIVERS Movie From Justin Lin, Set for Fall 2027 Release
Jason Momoa is gearing up for another high-octane mission, and this time he’s headed to Super Earth. Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are officially moving forward with a feature adaptation of Helldivers, and Momoa is set to star.
The film will be directed by Justin Lin, with a theatrical release locked in for November 10, 2027. Right now, it stands as the only major studio wide release on that date.
The movie is based on the wildly popular video game franchise from Arrowhead Game Studios. The original Helldivers launched in 2015, but it was Helldivers 2 that truly exploded. The sequel sold more than 12 million units across PS5 and PC in just its first four months after launching in 2024. The game has since expanded to Xbox and continues to perform.
The story of Helldivers 2 centers on an elite squad of soldiers known as Helldivers who are tasked with defending the fictional planet of Super Earth from alien threats looking to wipe it out. It’s big, chaotic sci-fi warfare with a heavy dose of satire and over-the-top action, which feels like a perfect match for Momoa’s screen presence.
Producing the film are Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Lin through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner. Sony and PlayStation Productions have built a solid track record adapting video game properties.
Their collaboration on Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, pulled in $407 million globally and ranks among the top ten highest grossing video game adaptations worldwide despite how terrible it was.
They also teamed up for Peacock’s Twisted Metal and HBO’s award-winning and critically acclaimed series The Last of Us, which raised the bar for what these adaptations can be.
For Momoa, Helldivers is just one more title in an absolutely packed slate. It was recently revealed that he’ll play intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in Supergirl, which hits theaters on June 26.
He currently stars opposite Dave Bautista in Amazon MGM Studios’ The Wrecking Crew on Prime Video. On May 1, he appears alongside Ryan Reynolds in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s hybrid animated film Animal Friends.
Later this year, he takes on the iconic role of Blanka in Legendary and Paramount’s Street Fighter on October 16 and returns as Duncan Idaho in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Dune: Part Three on December 18.
With Lin’s knack for large-scale action and Momoa’s larger-than-life presence, Helldivers could end up being one of Sony’s most explosive video game adaptations yet. If this movie captures even a fraction of the chaotic, alien-blasting insanity that made the games a hit, it’s going to be one wild ride.
