Jason Momoa Might Be Playing Blanka in STREET FIGHTER Movie and Other Character Details Shared
Legendary’s Street Fighter movie is moving forward and casting is underway. Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip, The Eric Andre Show) is officially in the director’s chair after stepping in for the Philippou brothers.
It was recently revealed Andrew Koji (Bullet Train), Jason Momoa (A Minecraft Movie), Noah Centineo (Warfare), and WWE megastar Roman Reigns (Hobbs & Shaw) are all in talks to star in the upcoming live-action film.
We know know who these actor might be playing. Momoa is said to be taking on the role of Blanka, the electric-skinned jungle warrior. If this goes through, it’s hard not to be curious about how far they’ll go with the character’s mutated look and wild energy.
Deadline also confirms that Koji and Centineo are in talks to lead the film as Ryu and Ken, respectively. The legendary duo have been the face of the Street Fighter franchise since its inception, known for their rival bromance and devastating “Hadoken” combos.
Meanwhile, insider Jeff Sneider has heard that Reigns has landed the role of Akuma, Ryu and Ken’s tragic villain and the murderer of their master, Gouken. That’s a great casting choice. I really hope that they lean into iconic looks of all these characters.
No plot details have been officially revealed, and we don’t know if this will be a globe-trotting martial arts saga, a tournament-style setup, or something more character-driven. But with these casting choices, it’s clear that the movie is looking to go big.
Let’s also not forget Street Fighter’s history with live-action. The 1994 cult classic starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile is remembered more for its camp than its quality, and 2009’s The Legend of Chun-Li... well, most fans forgot that ever happened.
With Sakurai’s surreal comedy chops (The Eric Andre Show, Twisted Metal), this reboot could bring a fresh tone that balances action and personality.
If the creative team really leans into the bizarre fun of the source material, this could finally be the Street Fighter movie we’ve been waiting for.
Stay tuned because we’re just getting to Round One.
