Legendary's STREET FIGHTER Movie Confirmed To Directed By Kitao Sakurai
Legendary’s live-action Street Fighter movie has found a new director and they’ve officially hired Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip, Twisted Metal). He reportedly signed on to direct the film months ago, but it’s just been confirmed by Deadline.
Sakurai takes over the project from Danny and Michael Philippou, who left the project over scheduling issues.
We’ll just have to wait and see if this filmmaker has what it takes deliver a great Street Fighter movie. Hopefully, he surprises us with soemthing unnexpectedly awesome.
Street fighter has the potential to be a massive hit if done right, combining badass martial arts action with the franchise’s lore and iconic characters. The Street Fighter series is packed with a diverse cast of fighters, each with their own unique fighting styles, rivalries, and personal struggles.
A well-crafted film could take inspiration from modern action-heavy movies like John Wick or The Raid, delivering high-energy, practical fight choreography that stays true to the game’s spirit.
One of the key elements to making a Street Fighter movie work is balancing its over-the-top energy with strong storytelling.
The 1994 adaptation, while now a cult classic, leaned too heavily into camp and struggled to tell a good story and character development. A new film could take a more grounded approach while still embracing the franchise’s colorful world, blending character-driven drama with exhilarating fight sequences.
We’ll just have to wait and see how this turns out.
