Jason Momoa Confirms "This Is The End" for the AQUAMAN Franchise but Teases His DCU Future

Jason Momoa recently appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and when asked if it was true that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom might be the last movie in the franchise, he confirmed that "this is kind of the end" of his tenure as the King of Atlantis. I mean, unless the sequel ends up making over a billion dollars like the first film. But, no one is expecting that.

He then went on to strongly hint at his DCU return as Lobo saying: "This is kinda the end of this DC universe," and then he added in a teasing voice, "There will always be a place for me at DC."

It was reported about a month ago that Momoa’s casting as Lobo was official and that DC Studio would make an official announcement next year in 2024. It was reported at the time:

“It is true — Jason Momoa is Lobo. Done. Jason Momoa has been cast as Lobo, and that will be officially announced most likely … I would say around February. It has nothing to do with the strike — it has to do with Aquaman. So Aquaman’s got to do theaters, and then it’ll be on Max … after it’s on Max and has played for a week or two on Max or whatever, I think in February — maybe March at the latest — you’re going to get an announcement about Momoa as Lobo — especially if he’s part of the Superman cast.”

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be the final film of the DCEU era and after that, James Gunn and Peter Safran will usher in the new DCU era starting with Superman: Legacy. After that, things are going to take an interesting turn and I’m actually kind of excited to see what Gunn does with the future of DC. I really do hope that he ends up building an epic DC cinematic universe that will be filled with good DC film and TV projects!

In Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, “Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.”

Jason Momoa stars as Aquaman in the movie and he’s joined by Patrick Wilson as Orm, Amber Heard as Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin.

Warner Bros. will release the film in theaters on December 20th.
