Jason Momoa’s Long Game Pays Off as the SUPERGIRL Team Opens Up About His Road to Lobo

The first official look at Jason Momoa as the DC antihero Lobo has finally landed in the new Supergirl trailer, and DC fans are already fired up. Momoa wanted this role badly. As the Supergirl creative team explains, he campaigned for it long before DC Studios even entered its new era.

Momoa ruled the seas as Aquaman in the previous DC films, but behind the scenes he had his eye on something far grittier. Peter Safran, who now leads DC Studios with James Gunn and also produced Momoa’s Aquaman movies, shared just how determined the actor was to bring the Main Man to life.

Safran recalled the moment with Entertainment Weekly, saying, "He's been talking about it forever. He was talking about it when he was doing Aquaman with me. He was talking about, 'I'd rather be doing Lobo.'

“But when the day was announced that we got this job [leading DC], he texted both of us, all caps, 'LOBO,' 10 exclamation marks. That was it...And a few Xs."

Lobo appears in the trailer for only a beat, cigar in mouth, walking straight out of the cosmic chaos. He’s just one of several characters making their live action debut as Supergirl rockets toward its June 26, 2026 theatrical release.

The film is led by Milly Alcock, who fans will recognize from House of the Dragon. She steps into the role of Kara Zor-El, a rough around the edges wanderer who crosses paths with a determined young girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll, played by Eve Ridley.

Kara is deep into a birthday bender when Ruthye finds her and pleads for help in seeking revenge for her murdered family.

The movie pulls from Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s celebrated comic Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow, which gives the story a sweeping, emotional and sometimes brutal adventure energy. The cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, David Krumholtz as Zor El and Emily Beecham as Alura In Ze.

For now, Lobo’s exact place in the story is being kept under wraps, but Alcock teased her experience working alongside Momoa, saying, "It was really interesting to watch him."

Safran added that Momoa’s passion made the decision easy. "It's so great to have an actor who is such a volunteer and not a recruit. He just wanted to do it. So when we had the script, and we were ready to go, it wasn't even a question. It was like, 'Here you go.' He's like, 'I'm in, let's go.' It was easy."

Supergirl opens in IMAX and theaters across North America on June 26, 2026.
