Jason Segel and Drew Pearce Team For LEGO Movie THE BILLION BRICK RACE

I've been wondering what writer/producer/actor Jason Segel would do after he wrapped his years-long run on How I Met Your Mother, and now we have an answer: THR reports that he's teaming with Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation writer Drew Pearce to write and co-direct a new LEGO movie called The Billion Brick Race. That's basically all the information we have on the project at the moment, since it's still in early stages of development, but we do know that The LEGO Movie overlords Phil Lord and Chris Miller will produce alongside Dan Lin and Roy Lee.

The story details are being kept under wraps, but the movie will be based on an idea from Pearce that really excited the studio. This will be the first directing gig for Segel and Pearce, and I'm excited to see what they do in this optimistic brick universe. Segel, who wrote, produced, and starred in The Muppets, seems like an especially great fit for that world, while Pearce has experience writing the kind of action that could make the titular race something special for fans.

Meanwhile, Pearce is working on a new Ghostbusters movie with Channing Tatum (who co-starred in The LEGO Movie as Superman), so there's no word yet on a timetable for this film. The Billion Brick Race joins Ninjago, The LEGO Batman Movie, and The LEGO Movie 2 in Warner Bros.' upcoming brick-based pipeline, so expect more LEGO films over the next few years. Maybe one of those will eventually be nominated for Best Animated Film at The Oscars and help make up for the past sins of the Academy.
