Jean-Claude Van Damme Heads Back Into Battle for WWII Thriller RAID PACIFIC

Even with a Bloodsport remake currently making its way through development nearly four decades after the movie launched him into action movie legend status, Jean-Claude Van Damme clearly isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

The martial arts icon has lined up his next project, and this one involves submarines, torpedoes, and wartime tension.

Van Damme is set to star in Raid Pacific, a WWII action epic directed by Steven Luke. The film is being introduced to buyers at Cannes by VMI Worldwide, with production coming from Dean Bloxom and Deano Prods.

Inspired by true events, the story unfolds in the uneasy aftermath of Pearl Harbor. Van Damme will play Captain William Pierce, a decorated U.S.-French submarine commander sent on a dangerous mission deep into enemy territory.

Pierce and his crew are tasked with transporting a small squad of Marine raiders into hostile waters to eliminate a key Japanese outpost that could dramatically impact the war effort.

This is a pretty cool direction for Van Damme at this stage of his career. Instead of leaning entirely on martial arts spectacle, Raid Pacific sounds like it’s aiming for something heavier and more character-driven while still delivering the kind of tension and action fans expect from a WWII thriller.

The production team seems fully aware of the kind of presence Van Damme brings to the table. Andre Relis of VMI Worldwide said:

“Raid Pacific is a story of resilience, sacrifice and leadership under extreme pressure. With Jean-Claude Van Damme bringing gravitas and intensity to the role of Captain Pierce, and Steven Luke’s proven ability to craft compelling WWII narratives, this film promises to deliver a powerful cinematic experience.”

Luke also shared what pulled him toward the project, saying: “Raid Pacific is exactly the kind of story I’m drawn to — grounded in real history, but driven by deeply human stakes.”

Producer Dean Bloxom added: “Having Jean-Claude Van Damme step into the role of Captain Pierce brings a unique intensity and emotional depth that will elevate this production in a powerful way. I’m excited to connect audiences with this intense, immersive journey beneath the surface of the Pacific,” said Bloxom.

Luke has built a reputation directing military-themed films, so pairing him with Van Damme for a claustrophobic submarine war movie could make for an unexpectedly awesome combo. There’s a lot of room here for suspense, explosive action sequences, and the kind of pressure-cooker storytelling that submarine movies thrive on.

Additional casting and production announcements are expected in the months ahead, but for now, Raid Pacific already sounds like a solid next chapter for Van Damme.

The guy’s still finding new ways to throw himself into high-stakes action stories.
