Jeremy Allen White Teases Rotta the Hutt Role in THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU and Speaking Huttese

The galaxy of Star Wars keeps finding new ways to surprise fans, and the upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu is digging deep into the franchise’s history to do it.

One of the movie’s more unexpected additions is Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt, who will make his live-action debut with Jeremy Allen White providing the voice.

Rotta hasn’t been seen since his appearance as a baby in Star Wars animation, but this new story will bring the character back as a grown Hutt navigating life with one very complicated legacy. Between his infamous father and the criminal empire attached to the Hutt name, there’s a lot of baggage for the character to deal with.

White recently spoke with Empire about stepping into the role and how he approached performing as the character. To capture the sound of a Hutt, he studied the most famous one in the galaxy.

“I listened to Jabba,” White explained about preparing for the voice work, adding that he even speaks “a little bit of Huttese” in the film.

It’s a fun detail, but Rotta’s story apparently goes deeper than a simple cameo. Director Jon Favreau hinted that the character’s arc revolves around growing up with the weight of Jabba’s legacy hanging over him.

Favreau compared that dynamic to another well-known cinematic figure trying to define himself beyond his father’s reputation.

“When you’re trying to establish yourself and your name is famous, when you’re Jabba the Hutt’s kid, what does that do? How has that affected his trajectory?”

That question adds an unexpectedly emotional angle to a character fans last saw as a helpless baby in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In that story Rotta was essentially a plot device.

Now he’s returning years later with a chance to become something more interesting, especially after the death of his notorious father.

The idea of Rotta wrestling with the legacy of Jabba actually fits right in with the themes that run throughout Star Wars. The franchise has always leaned into stories about fathers, sons, and the struggle to define your own path.

Seeing that play out through the child of one of the galaxy’s most infamous crime lords could lead to some intriguing moments.

Rotta also joins a growing list of animated characters crossing over into live action in the film. Characters like Zeb from Star Wars Rebels and the bounty hunter Embo from Star Wars: The Clone Wars are expected to appear, making the movie feel like a celebration of different corners of the franchise.

Unlike those characters, though, Rotta has a lot more to prove. Some viewers who aren’t familiar with his animated debut have already seen images of the character and wondered if Jabba somehow returned. That confusion shows how much the character is tied to his father’s legacy.

Whether Rotta ends up being a major part of the story or simply a memorable side character remains to be seen. But the setup Favreau describes sounds like it could easily support something bigger down the line if Lucasfilm ever wants to explore a Hutt-focused story.

We’ll find out what Rotta’s future looks like when The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters on May 22.
