Jeremy Renner Reveals What Hawkeye Has Been Doing Before AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY

The Marvel Cinematic Universe just keeps expanding, and between theatrical releases and Disney+ series, there’s always something new to dive into, but few upcoming projects have as much anticipation surrounding them as Avengers: Doomsday.

With a massive cast and multiple superhero teams joining forces, this is going to be a epic new chapter in the MCU. One familiar face making his return is Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and the actor recently offered a glimpse into where Clint Barton’s been since fans last saw him.

In an interview with ComicBook, Renner shared an update on his character’s state of mind leading up to the events of Doomsday:

“I think he started retired… but he’s always pulled out of retirement, you know. I think he’s a family man; you always know where his allegiance lies, and he’s always come out of retirement, man. Until he’s killed, he’s always gonna be working.”

It makes sense that Hawkeye would be trying to enjoy a peaceful life again, but knowing his track record, that probably won’t last long.

After the emotional events of the Hawkeye finale in 2021, Clint had more than earned some downtime with his family. But as Renner teases, it doesn’t take much to pull Barton back into the fight.

Clint Barton’s journey through the MCU has been an interesting one. From his first appearance in 2011’s Thor to standing alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in The Avengers, he’s faced loss, redemption, and more than his share of heartbreak.

After surviving the Blip and helping mentor Kate Bishop, it makes sense that he’d want to hang up the bow again… but heroes like Hawkeye never really retire.

Renner’s return to the MCU is also inspiring on a personal level. After his near-fatal snowplow accident, which left him with dozens of broken bones, fans weren’t sure if they’d ever see him back in action.

His recovery has been nothing short of remarkable, and seeing him once again take on the role of Hawkeye feels like a victory in itself.

Details about Avengers: Doomsday are being kept tightly under wraps, but with The Russo Bros. directing and the promise of major crossover moments between The Avengers, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and X-Men, expectations are super high.

The multiverse is in chaos, and if Renner’s comments are any indication, Hawkeye’s stepping back into the fray at a critical moment.

Fans won’t have to wait too much longer to see how it all plays out. Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
