J.J. Abrams Explains Why He Went Back to the Death Star in STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER
A lot of Star Wars fans were thrilled when they saw the wreckage of the Death Star from Return of the Jedi in the trailers for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. This is obviously going to a huge set piece in the film where a lot of exciting shit goes down. We just don’t know exactly where or how it fits into the story.
Director J.J. Abrams recently sat down with EW to talk about the film, and in the conversation, he explained why he wanted to go back to the Death Star and include it in the story. He compared it to a haunted house:
“It felt like going into the haunted house, the place that you have to go to. This is a story of people having to grapple with the burden the prior generation dumps on those that follow. So literally returning to this wreck of the past and having to fight it out felt like an obvious metaphor, but also felt incredibly cinematic.”
It’s kinda the same reason why Doctor Sleep went back to the Overlook Hotel. That concept worked out brilliantly in the movie, so hopefully, Abrams approached it in a way that will make it awesome and make fans happy.
There’s so much that we don’t know about The Rise of Skywalker. Abrams has previously said that the footage we’ve seen in the trailers are only scratching the surface of what this movie is. Well, I can’t wait to jump on board and see where this movie takes me!
The film will “take viewers on an epic journey to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the riveting conclusion of the seminal Skywalker saga, where new legends will be born and the final battle for freedom is yet to come.”
The movie is set to be released in U.S. theaters on December 20th. In the meantime, it looks like Lucasfilm and Disney have entered the heavy marketing phase of the movie.
