Jodie Comer Might Join Ryan Gosling in Shawn Levy’s Secretive STAR WARS Film

A new Star Wars project is quietly gathering momentum, and it looks like the cast might be getting even stronger.

According to insider MTTSH, Killing Eve star Jodie Comer is in talks to join Shawn Levy’s mysterious Star Wars film project, which already has Ryan Gosling locked in for the lead.

This would mark a reunion for Comer and Levy, who previously worked together on Free Guy. And while this wouldn’t technically be Comer’s first time in the galaxy far, far away — she briefly appeared as Rey’s mother in The Rise of Skywalker — this would be her first major role in the franchise.

Not much is known about the project, which Levy is developing with The Adam Project screenwriter Jonathan Tropper. The film is said to have a “significantly smaller budget” than the recent Disney-era installments and will take a more “contained” approach to storytelling.

Gosling’s character will reportedly be joined by a Jedi Padawan, leading many fans to speculate it might be set during the Jedi’s heyday. However, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed the film will take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

Levy, who’s fresh off directing Deadpool & Wolverine, is being treated as a “must-have, must-keep” filmmaker by Disney. That likely means he’ll have more creative freedom than most. His excitement about exploring uncharted territory in the Star Wars universe seems to back that up:

“I’ll say that the experience of crafting this story has forced me to think about that question,” Levy said when asked what he wants to bring to Star Wars. “Because there’s only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it’s really forced me—because I don’t want to do a Star Wars movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie.”

“I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me, both in tone and characters, so I think that there is certainly the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves. And the way that that can make us powerful, those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfillment, that’s Star Wars to me.”

Plot details are still locked down, and the project isn’t connected to the Skywalker Saga and it’s nice that the film will open the door to something new.

Production is expected to kick off in the UK later this year, so more casting news could be coming soon.

This untitled film is just one of several on Lucasfilm’s expanding slate, including Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey Skywalker focused story, James Mangold’s Jedi origin film, and Jon Favreau & Dave Filoni’s Mandoverse crossover event.

I hope we start getting some great Star Wars features films!
