John Boyega Once Thought Finn and Rey Would Become STAR WARS Rivals Like Obi-Wan and Darth Vader

The Star Wars sequel trilogy could have taken a far more dramatic turn than what we got, at least in John Boyega’s mind. The actor recently revealed that after reading the Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens script, he thought Finn’s story would lead to an epic showdown with Rey, echoing the legendary rivalry between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader.

"I think I assumed he was Force-sensitive from The Force Awakens script, or at least by the time I got to the end of The Force Awakens script. I thought they were planning dual Jedis.

“I actually thought that they would Obi-Wan and Darth Vader us a bit. That we would turn against each other or something along those lines."

Fans first met Finn as a defected Stormtrooper in The Force Awakens, where he quickly became an ally to Daisy Ridley’s Rey in the fight against Kylo Ren. There were subtle hints from the start that Finn was Force-sensitive, like the moment he wields a lightsaber in the film’s climax, which fueled speculation that his path might mirror that of other fallen heroes in the saga.

The comparison to Anakin Skywalker’s fall makes sense. Trained by Obi-Wan to bring balance to the Force, Anakin instead embraced the dark side and turned on his mentor to become Darth Vader.

In a similar alternate timeline, Finn’s Force-sensitivity and his complicated past with the First Order could have set him on a collision course with Rey. That would’ve actually made for an interesting dynamic.

Instead, Finn’s connection to the Force wasn’t made explicit until Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, and even then, he never told Rey about his Force abilities and stayed firmly on the side of the Resistance.

As for Finn’s future in the galaxy far, far away, nothing is officially on the horizon. Boyega hasn’t been confirmed for any upcoming Star Wars projects, but Rey will return in an untitled new film. Whether that opens the door for Finn’s comeback is something fans will be looking out for.
