John Boyega Thinks STAR WARS Could Learn a Thing or Two from STAR TREK
John Boyega has always made it clear where his loyalty lies in the great sci-fi divide between Star Wars and Star Trek. The actor, who played Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, proudly aligns himself with the Force-wielding, galaxy-spanning saga. But even with that deep love, Boyega admits there’s at least one thing the Star Wars universe could learn from its long-time rival.
During an appearance at the 2025 Dragon Con (via SFF Gazette), Boyega talked about his own fandom and made it very clear that he’s been a Star Wars fan from the start. “I'm an old school Star Wars fan, and if you're a Trekkie and you've met me at the booths, you would find that I would mention that I don't like Star Trek,” he said.
That said, Boyega isn’t blind to what Star Trek does well. While Star Wars focuses on epic battles and rebellion-fueled action, Star Trek has always been about exploration, diplomacy, and conversation. According to Boyega, that’s something the Star Wars franchise could use a bit more of.
“I just think that on the Trekkie side, they like to talk about it. On the Star Wars side, we just get active. With Star Wars, you've got to talk while the war is going on. In Star Trek, they give you time to have discussions. I think there's something Star Wars can learn from that, actually.”
Boyega’s comment highlights a key difference between the two franchises, one thrives on philosophical debate and moral dilemmas, the other thrives on the chaos of battle. And while both approaches have their strengths, there’s definitely something compelling about the idea of slowing things down and letting the characters really talk.
Boyega’s appreciation for Star Trek’s thoughtful storytelling doesn’t mean he’s about to jump ship. When asked about the possibility of joining the Star Trek universe, Boyega made it clear that won’t be happening anytime soon. “In terms of me appearing in [Star Trek], I've got to stay on team,” he said. “I'm a lightsaber guy.”
