John Cena Explains Why PEACEMAKER’s Return Is Taking So Long After That Wild Season 2 Cliffhanger
If you’re wondering when John Cena will finally return as Peacemaker after that frustrating Season 2 cliffhanger, you’re not alone.
The good news is Cena is more than willing to put the helmet back on. The bad news is that James Gunn has an entire DC Universe to build, and Christopher Smith isn’t exactly at the front of the line.
During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Cena discussed the future of Peacemaker and why fans might be waiting a while before seeing the character again.
When asked whether audiences had seen the last of Peacemaker, Cena jokingly replied, “You need a different guy on this chair.”
He also confirmed that he hasn't worn the character's iconic helmet since his last appearance, but that doesn't mean he's finished playing the role. In fact, Cena has already made his feelings clear to Gunn. “I will put this helmet on as long as you need me to,” he said.
Cena clearly loves working with Gunn, praising the creative environment the filmmaker creates and explaining how their collaborations have helped him grow as an actor.
As for why Peacemaker hasn't returned, Cena understands that Gunn has much bigger responsibilities these days.
He pointed out that Gunn's career took off with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise before he moved over to DC to direct The Suicide Squad. Gunn eventually created Peacemaker, a project that came together after he started writing the series out of boredom.
Now Gunn is running DC Studios and overseeing an entire superhero universe. That's a pretty massive jump from telling stories about one dysfunctional vigilante.
Cena explained that Gunn now has a “whole box of toys, and because you get the whole box of toys, you have to address the really valuable ones first.”
Those valuable toys include Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, characters who will play major roles in shaping the future of the DCU. But so far, Gunn has only played with Superman, Supergirl, and Clayface.
Cena doesn't see anything wrong with Gunn putting those heroes ahead of Peacemaker. “I’d be making those plays first. So, that’s okay.”
Still, it's tough for fans who watched Peacemaker Season 2 end without giving Christopher Smith's story a proper conclusion. The second season wrapped up with the episode "Full Nelson," written and directed by Gunn.
While the finale delivered some great character moments and strong performances, its pacing and cliffhanger ending divided viewers. It also left fans wondering when, or even if, Cena's character would return to resolve everything.
Interestingly, Cena doesn't necessarily view those unanswered questions as a bad thing. He compared the situation to his professional wrestling career, where fans continue asking him to return even after retirement.
For Cena, that kind of reaction means people connected with what he created and aren't ready to say goodbye. “Nobody’s saying good f—— riddance, Peacemaker,” he said.
He's grateful that audiences still want more of the character, but he also understands that he can't control every possible future opportunity or spend his time worrying about what might happen next.
Instead, he's focused on whatever comes his way, including his new action film Matchbox: The Movie, which arrives on Apple TV on October 9, 2026. Cena sees projects like Matchbox as exciting opportunities to keep moving forward, describing his attitude toward new roles as “okay, let’s go.”
As for Peacemaker, there doesn't appear to be a concrete timeline for his return, but Cena certainly hasn't closed the door.
That's encouraging, especially considering how well Cena fits the character. His performance has given Christopher Smith an entertaining mix of ridiculous humor, emotional baggage, and surprising heart.
Hopefully, Gunn eventually finds room for Peacemaker among all those bigger DC superheroes. After the way Season 2 ended, it would be a shame to leave his story hanging. It seemed like he was going to show up in Man of Tomorrow, but it seems like that’s not the case.
For now, it sounds like the helmet is ready whenever Gunn decides it's time to bring Christopher Smith back into the DCU.
