John Cena Set to Star in MATCHBOX From Mattel Film and Apple Original Films

John Cena is set to star in Matchbox, a new live-action feature film coming from Apple Original Films, Skydance, and Mattel Films.

The movie will be directed by Sam Hargrave and it is inspired by Mattel’s iconic real-world die-cast toy vehicle line. The script is written by David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper.

There are no details on what the story will entail. The Matchbox toy line was introduced in 1953 by Lesney Products, who revolutionized the die-cast toy car industry with its innovative approach to miniature vehicles.

The Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox.

So, named after their ability to fit inside a matchbox, the brand's early success was driven by affordable, well-crafted models of real-life vehicles that children could easily collect. Matchbox initially focused on cars but expanded its range to include trucks, planes, and even construction vehicles.

The brand remains a beloved part of toy culture, celebrated for its nostalgic value and its ongoing dedication to crafting realistic, high-quality die-cast vehicles that appeal to both children and collectors.

Matchbox will be produced by Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger, and Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films.
