JOHN WICK Director Chad Stahelski Needs a Little Time Before Jumps Into Making JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 5
John Wick: Chapter 4 is going to have to keep fans entertained for a while because it sounds like we are going to have to wait a little bit for John Wick: Chapter 5. Yes, there’s no doubt in my mind that we will get another John Wick movie, the question is, will Chad Stahelski direct it?
During a recent interview with /Film, when he was asked about the next film, he said: "Somewhere, maybe somebody will do it. I'm always saying, 'This is my last one, this will never happen again.' And I'll say that now: This is my last one."
He doesn’t mean it, though. The director previously said that he and Keanu Reeves have John Wick movie ideas for days and that he could make these films for the rest of his career:
“I enjoy making these movies because there’s no limit. We create our own mythology, and we have a studio that both stays out of our way and supports us on the wacky decisions. If people go see the movie, and it makes money, and they came back to us, Keanu and I have ideas for days. I could live here for the rest of my career.”
So, when he says that this is his last one, he’s lying. But, he does need a little time before he jumps back into making another sequel. He needs time to practice and get better at directing. He explained:
"Every time I come back to a 'Wick,' there's been two or three years in between. That's a lot of time for a human. You know how many pieces of art or music or museums or locations I've gone to in three years? Huge. I mean, think of what you do in a year. What would you do in three? Don't you think all that would influence you? I just don't think I'd be very good jumping right into something. I need a little bit of time to get better. I've got to go practice."
John Wick: Chapter 5 was originally supposed to shoot back-to-back with Chapter 4, but the pandemic threw that all out of wack. Obviously, Lionsgate still wants that fifth film, and when you see the new movie, you’ll see how that next movie is set up. The filmmaker went on to say:
"I tried to get better as a storyteller in this one, but I'd be the same guy jumping back into the next one. I've got to get better. Keanu's out there every day getting better — he's acting, he's trying new projects. I've got to sit in a room and go, 'Okay, how do I get better as a director?' I don't have the same choices. I can't just direct, direct, direct. I'd have no time to expand. I just think I'd get s***tier and s***tier. I just think, in loyalty to the franchise, I need to get a hell of a lot better before I try to find [another story]. Because otherwise, if you're not going to get better, if you're not going to do something different, if you're not going to try to expand and be artistically better, that's kind of lame just to do it for a paycheck."
You know, he makes some great points here and he should take the time to improve his skills. That’s what he should be doing, and when he’s ready to come back to Wick it up some more, he’ll be able to deliver another great action movie! There’s a reason these films get better and better.
John Wick: Chapter 4 hits theaters on March 24th, 2023.
