JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX Will Be a "Jukebox Musical” Featuring at Least 15 Well Known Songs

Some new details have emerged for director Todd PhillipsJoker: Folie à Deux. According to Variety the sequel will be “mostly a jukebox musical” in the style of Mamma Mia! and Moulin Rouge. The film is said to feature reinterpretations of at least 15 “very well-known” songs, including “That’s Entertainment” from 1953’s The Band Wagon.

We don’t know the full line-up of music, but there may be at least one or two original songs as Joker composer Hildur Guðnadóttir has returned for the sequel to “infuse her distinctive, haunting [music] cues.”

The plot for Joker: Folie à Deux’s plot remains under wraps, but the story will be set in Arkham Asylum and continue the story from the first film. Joaquin Phoenix returns as Arthur Fleck, and Lady Gaga takes on the role of his psychiatrist-turned-girlfriend Harley Quinn.

The movie is also inspired by Francis Ford Coppola’s infamous 1982 movie flop One from the Heart. Lawrence Sher praised director Phillips for going bold on the sequel saying: “Something I appreciate about Todd Phillips — who I’ve done seven movies with, including Joker — is that he’s always taking risks. We’ve got the new Joker coming out next year and we’re just finishing up post-production on it. This movie is a big swing and it’s going to be really surprising to people. I’m so excited for everyone to see it.”

There are some reactions to the film that have surfaced from early test screening, and it seems like people are liking what they are seeing.

Joker: Folie á Deux is scheduled for release on October 4, 2024.
